    Yo Clay,
I love the portapiles story. I’ve come up against Davis natives’ proprietary relation with their parking spots. A couple of years ago I was visiting a customer in East Davis, I think. It was at night and I parked across the street from her in a perfectly legal, unposted site. I came out to find a nasty note on my windshield, asking why I felt the need to park in front of their house in their spot. Sheesh, even in SF this hasn’t happened.

Right now I’m in the middle of Assembling California, having just finished Basin and Range. I got the bug after driving from CA to N Dakota this summer. Must know more. I’ve taken a couple of field trips with Eldridge Moores, as well as picking the brains of every geologist who’ll talk to me. I’m becoming a born-again geologist. — I loved that article in the New Yorker you referred to. — Best wishes, Keith

Keith — Your right Davisites tend to be a territorial species. It’s not one on their more admirable qualities. My across the street neighbor, the late Agitated Al, was an extreme example. I still have one of his windshield notes tuck in a scrapbook. It’s still hot, like radio active rock. Al meant the guided missive for some house guests visiting us from Australia.

Liked to hear about your budding interest in geology. I’ve become increasingly interested in geology over the last decade too.

Have seen you at Steady Eddy’s lately?
